Helios 44-2

The Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 is one of the most popular and affordable lenses ever made. Best known for its distinctive swirly bokeh, it has become a favourite for portrait photography and cinematic filmmaking.

Originally designed as an M42 mount prime lens, it’s commonly adapted for use on modern digital cameras.

Production began in the Soviet Union in the 1950s, using stolen German designs from World War II. Initially, the lens was intended to imitate the Carl Zeiss Biotar 58mm f/2, but due to production limitations, it ended up with the characteristic look we know and love today.

Despite its extremely low cost (you can find them on eBay for £50.00!), the Helios 44-2 has appeared in major productions such as Dune: Part Two and The Batman.

It’s the perfect example of how an unconventional, imperfect lens can deliver a unique visual signature, proving that great imagery isn’t always about hype or expensive gear.
